NetDescriptionsThe 1.6 million acre Bitterroot National Forest in west central Montana and east central Idaho is part of the Northern Rocky Mountains. National Forest land begins above the foothills of the Bitterroot River Valley in two mountain ranges, the Bitterroot Mountains on the west and the Sapphire Mountains on the east side of the valley. This Forest also contains portions of the Selway-Bitterroot, Anaconda-Pintler and Frank Church-River of No Return Wilderness Areas. Big-game species found in the area include bear, elk, moose, big horn sheep, mule and whitetail deer and Rocky Mountain goat. Along the trails, naturalists and photographers can see a variety of songbirds, hawks, eagles, and owls. In shaded groves, along quiet pools and out on the windswept range, gophers, chipmunks, beaver, porcupine, woodchucks, rabbits, squirrels, and other animals can be watched and photographed.
