NetDescriptionsMt. Baldy-Buckhorn Ridge Lookout has been used as an observation point for detecting forest fires since 1910. In 1914 a permanent lookout was stationed in a tent and a 45' pole tower with a platform was erected. A telephone line was strung to the Sylvanite Ranger Station. A log cabin was built in 1927 and sometime between 1932 and 1940 a cupola was added. The current facility was built in 1957. This lookout contains 144 square feet and is located on a 26 foot tower. This lookout is equipped with a propane cook stove, heater, and refrigerator. One bunk with three mattresses, table, 2 chairs, shovel, bucket and cleaning gear. Water sources are limited in the area and there is no water at the lookout. We recommend taking your own drinking water as all open water is considered contaminated. The lookout can be reserved 3 days in advance of your stay by contacting the Ranger Station or Contact the National Recreation Reservation Service at 1-877-444-6777 or www.recreation.gov, the cabin can be reserved 180 days in advance of your stay. $35.00 per night, 14 day stay limit. Wildlife viewing opportunities are plentiful and the viewing aesthetics are extraordinary. Due to tower height, we discourage bringing children.
