NetDescriptions | Discover the rich cultural and natural history of Park County.
Park County, Montana is a crossroads of culture. The area has served as temporary or permanent home for Native Peoples for at least 12,600 years. Fur trappers and explorers, homesteaders, railroad workers, ranchers, business owners, Yellowstone employees, artists, guides, arrived much later. Livingston became the original rail entrance to Yellowstone National Park in 1883 when the Northern Pacific Railway arrived and established a spur line south toward the park. The museum is housed in a three-story 1906 schoolhouse that is on the National Register of Historic Places. Four large exhibit rooms interpret Native Cultures, Yellowstone, Stories of the West, and Transportation; landings, temporary exhibits, and courtyard interpret Ice Age mammals, Ice Patch archaeology, military history, one-room schoolhouse, blacksmith shop, and more. Many interactive hands-on activities for children and families throughout the museum. |
