NetDescriptions | Pioneer Pottery studio and gallery/sales shop are housed in a converted stable on a working cattle ranch in the foothills of the Beartooth Mountains. Stoneware pottery is handmade on location by master craftsmen Janet Hero Dodge and Julie Dickinson. The pots are noted for distinctive decorations inspired by the animals, plants, colors, and textures of the Montana landscape.
Both potters were trained in the European apprenticeship tradition by Marguerite Wildenhain and Janet studied pottery in Kyoto, Japan. Their work is sought by collectors throughout the U.S. and abroad.
The riverfront site of Pioneer Pottery is of historical significance as the original homestead of the first white woman settler in the upper East Rosebud Valley.
Attractions in the surrounding area include camping, B&Bs, and extensive backcountry trails in one of the most scenic mountain landscapes in the west. Fine food is available at the rustic local restaurant. |
