G. Brooke, which was used as a stopping place for stages running from Helena to Virginia City. Brooke named his station Old Whitehall, after a similar structure in Whitehall, Illinois. The modern community developed after the railroad came through in 1889 with a branch line between Garrison and Logan. (from Cheney's Names on the Face of Montana, Mountain Press Publishing Company)

Whitehall's community sits in the heart of the Deerlodge National Forest. Near Whitehall are areas for backpacking, hunting, boating, and swimming. There are numerous snowmobile trails for winter riding and summer trail rides. Fish the Jefferson or Boulder River near Whitehall, or stop at the city park. There are many recreational opportunities right in the town of Whitehall, including an outdoor swimming pool, movie theater, baseball/softball fields, rodeo grounds, bowling alley, tennis courts, a museum and antique shops.

Nearby is Lewis and Clark Caverns State Park, Montana's first and best-known state park. It features one of the largest known limestone caverns in the Northwest. Naturally air conditioned, these spectacular caves, lined with stalactites, stalagmites, columns, and helictites, are electrically lighted and safe to visit. Above ground, a self-guided nature trail provides opportunities to understand the natural surroundings.

Elevation: 4,360 feet
