The trail climbs above timberline to a saddle where you have views of both the Missouri River Valley and the Smith River Valley. To access the Edith Lake Trail 152, take Highway 12 east of Townsend for about 12 miles; turn left at the Deep Creek Bar on the North Fork of Deep Creek Road 423. Follow the road about 9 miles, turn left on road 423 F1 for about 1 mile. This trail begins at 6,900 feet elevation at the trailhead and has parking for horse trailers. Edith Lake is 4.5 miles from the trailhead. However, if you have a four-wheel drive vehicle, you can drive a mile further. Edith Lake Trail is considered difficult because of the steep grade coming back from the lake. The trail switchbacks up to saddle just north of Mount Edith at an elevation of 8,800 feet with a spectacular view of Townsend, White Sulphur Springs, Mount Baldy and Edith Lake, about one mile away at an elevation of 8,020 feet. Elk, deer, mountain goats and grouse often may be seen along the way. Interesting geological formations can be seen when descending to Edith Lake. The lake offers good fishing for rainbow trout that can be caught from the shore, and a magnificent view of the sheer cliff coming down from Mount Baldy. This is a great way to spend a summer day, or camp overnight at the water's edge. Time brought several transformations to the 'M.' In 1912, a wooden letter replaced the one made of stone. When the wooden 'M' was blown off the mountain in 1915, it was replaced with a more permanent, larger stone 'M.' That structure remained until 1968, when it was replaced with the concrete 'M' we see today. A hike to the 'M' is a favorite Missoula outing for people of all ages. After just a few minutes on the trail, you begin to get a birds'-eye view of the University of Montana. As you gain elevation, the view expands to include all of Missoula, the valley, the Clark Fork River and distant mountains. While the trail is less than a mile long, the hike can be quite strenuous, depending on how quickly you cover this distance. You'll climb a steep, zigzag path with 11 switchbacks and gain 620 feet in elevation. Many local athletes and fitness buffs run the 'M' trail as a regular part of their regimen. Most people make the 'M' their final destination, but you can continue to climb for about another mile on one of two routes to the top of Mount Sentinel. The view from the top of the mountain is even more exquisite. To the north, across Hellgate Canyon, you'll see Mount Jumbo and the Rattlesnake National Recreation Area and Wilderness. Look for the water lines etched into the slopes of Mount Jumbo by the waters of Glacial Lake Missoula. To the south, you can see the Bitterroot Mountains. From the top of Sentinel, you can retrace your steps to the base of the mountain or follow Crazy Canyon Trail into Pattee Canyon. David Thompson called it 'Brown Knowl' when he climbed in on February 26, 1812. Later, eastern settlers thought Mount Jumbo looked like a sleeping elephant and miners christened a nearby copper mine 'Jumbo Lode' in honor of Barnum and Bailey's most famous attraction. Locals saw the landform as a reclining elephant with its rump in the Clark Fork River and its trunk pointing north toward the Rattlesnake Mountains; the round grassy mountain became known as 'Elephant Hill.' Later, the feature was renamed Mount Jumbo. In 1995, Missoula residents voted to support an open space bond to help purchase Mt Jumbo to protect its unique wildlife habitat and public access. In the fall of 1864, a miner named Wilson Butts staked his claim along Last Chance Gulch by building the snug cabin with large glass windows, the first large glass windows in Helena. Butts added a room when his brother and sister-in-law (Jonas and Luanna) arrived with their three daughters to live with him. The creek which drew Butts and other miners to Helena no longer flows, having been stopped by an earthquake in the 1930s. Before it disappeared, the creek produced over $60 million in gold. Today the cabin is furnished to reflect the first three families who lived there; visitors can tour the cabin during the summer. When the cabin is closed, visitors can view the interior through the windows. Tours can be arranged/requested for the time you are in Helena. The Pioneer Cabin stands as one of the last remaining structures that represents early Helena. It is the only one of its kind in the state of Montana. It also serves as the gateway to Reeder's Alley, the oldest part of Helena. The garden next to the cabin is available for weddings and parties. Today it is owned by the City of Helena. Built as the headquarters of the Algeria Shrine, this Moorish Revival style building is a popular photo opportunity for visitors. The building' suffered damage in the 1935 earthquake and the City of Helena purchased it the following year. It was the home of city offices until 1976, when they were moved to the current City-County Administrative Building. The City's Main Fire Station, however, is still located at the Civic Center. The Helena Civic Center is a rental facility for the City of Helena. The Auditorium is used as a venue for off-Broadway touring acts, as well as out-of-state and local events. In 1921 'The March King' John Philip Sousa's band came to town to celebrate the opening of the Auditorium and since has been heavily used. Live! At the Civic: holds its season's events in the Auditorium, as does the Helena Symphony. Other annual events include performances of the Nutcracker, middle and high school concerts and other touring road shows. Another rental facility within the Helena Civic Center is the Ballroom. General improvements to the building include restroom renovation to increase capacity and meet compliance with ADA requirements. Highlights of the concert series include several Symphony Kids concerts, free concerts created for 5-10 year olds including narration, actors, and members of the Helena Symphony Orchestra & Chorale; the Christmas in the Cathedral, Helena’s greatest and longest holiday tradition; and the Symphony Under the Stars, a free, outdoor summer performance at Carroll College that attracts over 16,000 people. The Helena Symphony performs in the Helena Civic Center, the largest concert hall in Montana, as well as the Cathedral of Saint Helena.
