The town was platted in 1905. The Yellowstone Park Railroad Company built into Belfry in 1906 and planned to continue the road up the Clark's Fork Valley to the park, but this was never accomplished. Belfry was the headquarters for the Montana, Wyoming, and Southern Railroad.
