DirectionsThe Bar Gulch Cabin is situated in the Big Belt Mountain range. It is located 24 miles from Helena and 30 miles from Townsend, on the Magpie Road (#425). From Helena, take the Canyon Ferry Road over the dam, by the Canyon Ferry village area, and past Kim's Marina. Continuing east, watch for a left-hand turn onto Magpie Road. From this intersection, proceed up Magpie Road 3.9 miles turn left on Bar Gulch Road. Continue on this (Bar Gulch) road approximately 1/4 mile to the cabin, it will be to your left. (Note: Please respect the private lands that are near the cabin site).1

NetDescriptionsJust up the Magpie drainage from the Canyon Ferry village, Bar Gulch cabin offers a retreat from the fast pace. It is a small, one room cabin with a skylight, cabin sleeps with 2 bunk beds and a full-sized bed. Only five miles from Canyon Ferry Lake, it provides an excellent base camp for boating, fishing, hunting, hiking and more. Helena is the largest city in the area, it is approximately 24 miles away. It offers all services. There are local businesses within the driving vicinity of the cabin; marinas, restaurants, convenient stores and watering holes. This cabin offers some primitive and rustic charms endemic to Forest Service rental cabins; a skylight, hand-pump well, a small antique cook stove, and wood heat. Access to the cabin is good and does not usually require a 4-wheel drive vehicle but the Forest Service does not provide snow removal to the cabin. Reservations must be made at least 1 day in advance. Cabin can only be reserved for up to 180 days in advance. 5 night maximum, Check-in at 2:00pm and Check-out at 1:00pm. Rental fee is $25/night, plus reservation fee. This cabin is accesses by gravel road, it is not snow plowed. Please be prepared. All garbage and food must be packed out. Keep open fires within the fire ring. No electricity, sewer or power available. The area around the cabin offers a variety of landscapes, from river bottoms to subalpine. Valley bottoms, dense forests, meadows, occasional clearings and barren ridges are mixed with streams, rivers, and lakes. Experience the diversity by exploring the Big Belt Mountains. There are several hiking opportunities right out your back door, and numerous miles of forest roads to explore; including Hellgate, Avalanche and Confederate Gulches as well as the eastside of the mountain range towards White Sulphur Springs. Don't miss a chance to hike the Belt Divide Trail as well as the Bar Gulch trail.
