NetDescriptions | The Phillips County Museum and H.G. Robinson House & Gardens is in the heart of Missouri River Country and on the Lewis and Clark Trail. The purpose of the museum is to preserve the natural, historic and cultural heritage of the Phillips County region for others to enjoy. Visit "Elvis", one of the most complete dinosaur skeletons ever found. Meet Kid Curry and the Wild Bunch some of the last outlaws to rob a train! Enjoy many more historical exhibits that include mining, Native Americans, dinosaurs, military, medical, outlaw, ranching, and homestead items. Genealogy requests can be answered through an extensive reference library that includes homestead maps, plat maps, family histories, newspapers, obituaries, yearbooks, county histories, artifacts and historic photographs. In addition, we provide high quality reproductions of the museum's unique historical photographs for purchase.
Our real-life dinosaur collection features: (1) the three-dimensional original skeleton of 'Elvis', a Brachylophosaurus, named for its 'pristine pelvis' and measuring 33 feet long; (2) an upright, full size Albertosaurus, which is a sub-species of the Tyrannosaurus Rex. Albertosaurus was the main predator of the Brachylophosaurus. An added attraction is the interactive display of a 700-pound Apatosaurus femur. Children are allowed to have their picture taken with the Apatosaurus femur towering over them. The Phillips County Museum is a proud member of the Montana Dinosaur Trail. View our dinosaur exhibits and have your passport stamped.
Meet Kid Curry and his gang, the Wild Bunch. Enjoy the exhibit that recalls his infamous 1901 train robbery, west of Malta. The Kid's authentic pistol highlights this story.
The beautifully restored 1903 H.G. Robinson house and 'walk through time' garden is located directly east of the museum. Tours are available upon request. The historic Robinson home is a turn-of-the-century home built on the frontier prairie. H.G. Robinson wanted to be a cowboy when he left New York for Billings at just nineteen years old. Learn his story and the story of this restored home.
A 'must see' is the unique gift shop where a diverse selection of Montana-made items, souvenirs and gift ware may be purchased. Montana made pottery jewelry, and porcupine toothpicks top the list to purchase. Plush animals indigenous to our area ask visitors to take them home. The bookstore features local artists, stories of the early American homesteaders, and ghost stories of Montana that raise the hair on the back of the neck!
Need to stretch your legs? We invite you to stroll and view the most recent attraction - the Milk River Bird Sanctuary trail. Many species of native birds can be observed along the walk which borders the Milk River and the grounds of the Phillips County Museum and historic H. G. Robinson House & Gardens.
