DirectionsLocated approximately 40 miles south of Sheridan, Montana, via the Ruby River Road. Four-wheel drive is not necessary to reach Vigilante, except during wet or snowy conditions. About 30 miles of the drive is on gravel road, which can be slippery when wet or snow-covered. To purchase the SW Montana Interagency Visitor/Travel East Half Map, call the Madison Ranger District.1

NetDescriptionsVigilante was once a guard station in the early 1920's. The Vigilante cabins were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the 1920's. The middle house is available for public use. Located on the road, this is a popular spot for fishing, hunting, snowmobiling, panning for gold, and hiking. The other two buildings on the site are used by Forest Service personnel during the year. The minimum window for reservations is 1 day Private horses are not allowed at this site. Bring your own drinking water in the winter. Bears frequent the area. All food must be kept in approved containers or inside building. ATVs allowed on designated trails only. Bring garbage bags. This facility is 'Pack it in. Pack it out.' Potential exposure to hantavirus due to presence of mice droppings inside cabin. Cell phone coverage is minimal to none. Vigilante is a frame house with two bedrooms, living room, kitchen, and has electric lights, stove, and refrigerator. Water and sewer are not available in the fall and winter. Water and sewer available June through September. An outhouse is adjacent to the house. Available year-round with a capacity of six people. The non-refundable fee is $50.00 per night. Any changes to reserved dates may be assessed an additional fee by NRRS. For more information call the Madison Ranger District at (406) 682-4253. Water is available June through September.
