NetDescriptionsThe Schoolhouse History & Art Center (SHAC) was originally constructed in 1924 to serve as a schoolhouse for the newly established community of coal miners and area ranchers in Colstrip, Montana. Over the years, the building served multiple purposes, including use as a teacherage and later as an apartment house. Eventually, it was left vacant and fell into disrepair, becoming vulnerable to vandalism and structural decline. In the 1980s, a group of concerned citizens purchased the building from the local School Board for one dollar. They subsequently formed a charitable nonprofit corporation and launched a restoration campaign to preserve the historic structure and ensure it remained a vital community resource as a museum and arts center. Today, SHAC houses two galleries: one dedicated to Colstrip-area historical photographs that document the story of strip mining in southeastern Montana from the 1920s to the present, and a second gallery featuring rotating contemporary art exhibitions. The lower level includes a classroom and a fully equipped ceramics studio, both of which are used regularly for SHAC’s arts education programming. A current schedule of programs and events is available on SHAC’s website. SHAC has demonstrated its ongoing value as a community resource, serving not only as a space for visual arts and historical preservation but also as a venue for a wide range of cultural and community events. Annual events include the Quilt Show, Golf Tournament, Student Art Show, Christmas Market, Brewfest, and Luminaria. The facility is also available for rental by individuals and organizations for meetings, weddings, lectures, seminars, and other gatherings. The Schoolhouse History & Art Center remains committed to its mission of blending cultural tourism, education, the arts, and local history in order to serve residents and visitors of all ages and interests.
