NetDescriptionsCentral Montana is a region of vivid landscapes and contrasts, from plains to high mountain peaks. Famed cowboy artist Charlie Russell lived and painted in this area and many of his works of art can be viewed at the Russell Museum in Great Falls. Lewis & Clark also explored much of this region as they traveled up the Missouri River. The Lewis & Clark Interpretive Center in Great Falls details their interaction with the Plains Indians and their portage of nearby waterfalls. Conservationist Bob Marshall dedicated his life to what is now the largest expanse of wilderness in the lower 48 states. The Bob Marshall Wilderness, Scapegoat Wilderness and Great Bear Wilderness combine to form the western edge of the Central Montana tourism region. Three wilderness access areas from the east slope of the Rockies are near Augusta, Choteau and Dupuyer. Charming small towns dot the landscape throughout Central Montana offering an up-close look at rural life, homesteading history, fur trade history and Native American history. Six museums in Central Montana are on the Montana Dinosaur Trail and there are also opportunities for hands-on paleontology digs. Fly fish the blue ribbon Missouri River or our small trout streams, hike in the Lewis & Clark National Forest, explore birding trails throughout the region or drive our scenic byways. Live the life of a cowboy at our guest ranches. Learn to ride, rope or hike the vast ranchlands. A visit to Central Montana puts you in close proximity to both Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks. Come and explore all that Central Montana has to offer!
