DirectionsStarting from Missoula, go south on Highway 93 to Sula, approximately 90 miles. Just before crossing the East Fork of the Bitterroot River in the town of Sula, take a left onto the East Fork Road. Travel approximately 15 miles to Forest Road #435, Johnson Peak Trail. Travel 5.5 miles to the trailhead. Hike 1.5 miles to the lookout. Snowmobiles, ATVs or motorcycles are not allowed on this trail. NetDescriptionsMcCart Lookout is a historic L4 lookout located on McCart Peak east of the Bitterroot Valley. The lookout is one room with a bed platform suitable for two people. The lookout can accommodate up to four. The lookout measures 14x14 feet with a 30-inch catwalk around the outside. There is a wood stove for heat. You may have to saw your own wood from down and dead material found nearby. A bowsaw and ax are provided. A two burner propane campstove is provided but bring your own propane canisters. Utensils for cooking and eating are provided. There is no drinking water available. A Coleman lantern is provided but bring your propane to operate it. An outdoor toilet serves the lookout but bring your own toilet paper. The lookout has been restored to reflect a lookout of the 1940s. This includes the stove, furniture, dishes and other small touches. There is a small corral for two or three head of stock. There is a combination lock on the door of the lookout. Call the Sula Ranger District one week prior to your arrival for the current combination.
