DirectionsSun River Wildlife Management Area is located in Lewis and Clark County, approximately 9 miles northwest of Augusta. The north edge of the Wildlife Management Area is south of the Sun River as it leaves Sun Canyon. From Augusta, take the Gibson Reservoir/Sun Canyon Road northwest approximately 3.5 miles. Where the road forks, take the left fork and proceed west 5 miles to the Wildlife Management Area. Vehicles may enter at the southeast corner of the Wildlife Management Area or 2.5 miles farther west at Swayze Lake. The Wildlife Management Area can also be accessed (walk-in only) at several turnoffs along the Gibson Reservoir Road.1

NetDescriptionsThe Sun River is one of Montana's most beautiful and scenic rivers. The Sun begins in the Bob Marshall Wilderness and flows southeast to Great Falls where it meets the Missouri River. You will enjoy great fishing for trout and mountain whitefish as well as excellent boating on Gibson Reservoir. Wildlife Management Area goal: To maintain and improve habitat diversity and quality for elk and other species currently utilizing the Wildlife Management Area and to provide hunting and wildlife viewing opportunities. Hunting/Fishing opportunities: Elk hunting during the archery season. Antlerless elk and antelope hunting by permit only. Mule deer, white-tailed deer, black bear, and grouse hunting during archery and general seasons outside the December 1 - May 15 closure. Limited waterfowl hunting (duck and Canada goose). Fishing in Barr Creek and Swayze and Dickens lakes Wildlife viewing: A variety of game and non-game bird and animal species may be viewed from May 15 to December 1. Peak times for birding include spring and fall waterfowl migrations. Large numbers of elk can usually be observed from the county road during the winter months.
