NetDescriptionsMadison-Wall Creek Wildlife Management Area located along the Madison River in southwest Montana. Management goal: To provide year-round habitat for wildlife, emphasizing elk winter range, and to provide a variety of public outdoor recreational opportunities. Hunting opportunities: Archery and rifle hunting seasons for elk, mule deer, white-tailed deer, moose, antelope and black bear are open to licensed hunters. Limited opportunities also exist for upland game bird hunting. Fishing opportunities: Wall Creek Wildlife Management Area provides public fishing access to the upper Madison River. Wildlife viewing: Winter presents the best opportunities for viewing elk and mule deer (although the Wildlife Management Area is closed to recreational activity between December 1 and May 15, deer and elk can be observed from Highway 287). Antelope and black bear can be seen in spring, summer and fall, as can a variety of raptors, small mammals, and songbirds. The Madison River is a major migration corridor for Canada and snow geese, ducks, loons, swans and sandhill cranes. Furbearers such as beaver, muskrat, mink and river otter can be seen along the river and its tributaries.
