NetDescriptionsEstablished in 2004, American Prairie Reserve is a private, nonprofit effort to create the largest wildlife reserve in the continental United States by linking together more than three million acres of private and public land on Montana's legendary Northern Great Plains. When complete, the Reserve will provide critical habitat for a variety of species, offering modern visitors the opportunity to experience a wildlife spectacle unlike anything in North America. Herds of elk, deer, pronghorn and bison once roamed these grasslands in great numbers. Now the Reserve is restoring wildlife across its lands to create a functioning ecosystem and for public enjoyment. Resident and migrating birds fill the sky. Native American and homestead-era historical sites are preserved for the future. With an estimated two-thirds of the nation's mixed- and short-grass prairies already lost to development, surviving grasslands have the potential for incredible biodiversity and discovery. Stunning vistas and unique topography provide an impressive backdrop for recreation. Unlike developed national parks, the privately created American Prairie Reserve has a truly rugged quality and a sense of uninterrupted nature. Discover the power of dark skies; quiet trails; and remote, unbroken land. Each visit offers something new whether you're on foot, wheels, or horseback. ACTIVITIES: Hiking, Mountain Biking, Horseback Riding, Driving Tours, Wildlife Viewing, Photography, Hunting, Geocaching, Volunteering CAMPGROUND: Situated close to a variety of hiking and biking opportunities, Buffalo Camp is a primitive campground that features 13 sites (6 tent and 7 camper) and provides non-potable water, vault toilets, group pavilions, and an amphitheater for $10/night (no electricity) and $15/night (with electricity). Tent sites include large, low-impact platforms with tie-down cleats. In addition to an informational kiosk, you will also find a 1-mile hiking trail, prairie dog town, and geocaches adjacent to the facility. Buffalo Camp is open year-round. No reservations; first come, first served. SAFETY: The Reserve is situated in a remote location where services are extremely limited. Many roads are unmarked, so use an odometer to track mileage. Limited cell phone coverage in this area. Four-wheel-drive, high-clearance vehicles strongly recommended. Arrive with a full tank of fuel and enough potable water for your stay. Travel on APR is at your own risk and there is no guarantee of safety.
