NetDescriptionsSperry Chalet was built about 1913 by James J. Hill and son Louis Hill of the Great Northern Railway, the prime developer of Glacier National Park. Listed as an Historic Landmark, these rustic buildings, built of native rock, has survived their rugged environment relatively unchanged through the years. The chalet is situated on a broad alpine ledge on the west side of Gunsight Mountain overlooking Lake McDonald and the Whitefish Range, seemingly surrounded by craggy peaks, cascading waterfalls, and up and down vistas. It is an area full of alpine nooks and crannies waiting to be explored by those who like to relax and enjoy being away from it all. The main trail to Sperry is from the Lake McDonald Lodge parking lot which is an elevation of 3,214 feet. With an average hiking time of 4.5 hours, this 6.7-mile trail, with its 3,300-foot VERTICAL RISE, IS A CHALLENGE TO MANY HIKERS. For those who deem it more practical, saddle horse trips to Sperry are available from the Lake McDonald horse barn. The main building consists of a kitchen/dining room building and a two-story hotel building. A maintenance building and a new restroom building are located between dining room and hotel buildings. Except for modernized kitchen facilities and the new outside toilet, an effort has been made to keep both the interiors and exteriors of the chalets much as they were built. The guest rooms are private, but not modern and no electricity or running water. Flashlights are recommended for night use. No candles, fueled lights, etc., are allowed in the rooms. The kitchen and dining room have propane lights installed. Meals are informal, table d'hote; dinner is served from 6:00pm to 8:00pm, breakfast from 6:30am to 8:30am and lunch at noon (or trail lunch provided). Ala carte service is available in the dining room from 11:30am to 5:00pm. Overnight accommodations are on the full American plan only, and reservations are required.
